New York, NY – John Calvelli, Chairperson of the Conference of Presidents of Major Italian American Organizations (The Conference), today praised the historic election of Representative Nancy Pelosi to the position of House Democratic Leader. Pelosi is the first woman to serve as a leader of either party in the House or Senate.

“This is truly an historic event,” said Calvelli. “The Conference is extremely proud of the election of Representative Nancy Pelosi as House Democratic Leader -- she is not only the first woman to hold such a post in the United States Congress, but also an Italian American. She adds to the growing long list of Italian American political pioneers.”

Pelosi, a mother of five, was first elected to the House at age 47, and has risen rapidly through the Democratic ranks. She has made her mark not only in serving the people of Northern California, but also for her outstanding work in Congress on human rights. As well, the Wall Street Journal recently praised her for her work as ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, noting she has resisted “cheap partisanship.”

It is of note that Pelosi comes from a strong Italian American political family. Her father was a congressman from Maryland and later the mayor of Baltimore, and her brother also served as Baltimore's mayor

“At a moment such as this, Democrats and Republicans can put politics aside to embrace Representative Pelosi’s accomplishments as well as the shear significance of the event,” Calvelli said.

The Conference of Presidents of Major Italian American is the central coordinating body representing 37 national and regional Italian American organizations on issues of national and international concern.  The National Italian American Foundation, headquartered in Washington, DC, serves as the Secretariat for the Conference, providing logistical support to its ongoing activities.
